Aging in Place: Supporting Caregivers Through ADPs

Family caregivers are the backbone of community care, yet too often they navigate complex responsibilities with limited support. Adult Day Programs offer something powerful: a place where older adults can engage, connect, and thrive, while caregivers gain essential respite and reassurance.

This presentation takes a celebratory and practical look at the role of Adult Day Programs in supporting both clients and caregivers. Drawing on research, including Gitlin’s Adult Day Services Plus (ADS Plus) model, we will explore how embedding caregiver support into day programs can improve caregiver well-being, increase confidence in managing care, and even help delay transitions to long-term care .

Together, we will highlight how Adult Day Programs are more than a service, they are a cornerstone of helping people age in the right place, strengthening families, and building more compassionate, community-based systems of care.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the essential role of family caregivers in supporting older adults living in the community and the challenges they experience.
  • Describe the value of Adult Day Programs in enhancing quality of life for clients while providing meaningful respite and support for caregivers.
  • Understand evidence-based approaches, including Gitlin’s Adult Day Services Plus (ADS Plus) model, that embed caregiver support within day programs.
  • Identify practical strategies for strengthening caregiver support within Adult Day Programs to promote aging in the right place.
  • Reflect on opportunities to celebrate and elevate the role of Adult Day Programs within an integrated, community-based system of care.
