FitMinds

FitMinds is a free eight-week brain health course designed to stimulate the mind in fun, engaging, and meaningful ways.

Research suggests that lifestyle-based programs such as FitMinds can help reduce the risk of dementia by up to 33%.

The program consists of seven 90-minute sessions, each including:

  • 30 minutes of engaging lecture-style learning
  • 60 minutes of interactive activities such as puzzles, memory recall exercises, storytelling, problem-solving, and computation
The final session is a graduation celebration recognizing participants for their commitment and participation.

Topics Covered

Throughout the program, we focus on five key areas that support healthy aging and brain health:

  • Nutrition
  • Socialization
  • Mental Stimulation
  • Spirituality
  • Physical Activity

To support brain growth and reduce the risk of dementia, participants are encouraged to:

  • Complete 30 minutes of "Sit and Be Fit" exercise 4 to 5 times per week
  • Maintain proper hydration (approximately one cup of water for every 20 pounds of body weight)
  • Engage in at least 30 minutes of daily mental stimulation that is both novel and challenging
Participants also receive take-home booklets and presentation materials to reinforce the concepts discussed during each session.

2026 Unison Calgary memberships are available now through the Active Aging Department and Membership Desk.
