Unison is Here to Improve the Lives of Seniors

We do this through our growing set of programs and services. We support generations 50+ to maintain a healthy lifestyle with healthy food, physical activity, courses and classes, and access to trusted information resources.

Active Aging

Built to help older adults stay engaged and connected, Unison's Active Aging programs offers those aged 50+ a variety of opportunities to learn new skills and connect physically, emotionally, and socially. Our program includes both in-person and online options to accommodate mobility, health, or transportation challenges. We offer: 

Courses

Fitness, academic, language, arts and music, digital skills training, and general interest classes. Registration required.  

Workshops 

Available in-person and online, covering a wide range of topics. 

Presentations 

Topics tailored for seniors, from health to finances. 

Drop-in Activities 

Including: Badminton, Ping Pong, Pickleball, Woodcarving Club, Mahjong, and more! No registration required.  

Events 

Holiday celebrations, Seniors' Week, and Active Aging Week. 

Fun Activities 

Have included: indoor skydiving, axe throwing, downhill karting, walking soccer, and more! Registration required.  

Unison Travel 

Trips include: day trips, hikes, theatre performances, and more. Registration required.

Wellness Connection Centre

Unison’s Wellness Connection Centre aims to support the mental, emotional, and spiritual health of older adults. Mental health is vital to full body health and a healthy mind will set up an individual for success in their daily life.

We are constantly improving our services, creating, and assisting with a myriad of supports on a daily and weekly basis. Our programming includes group support as well as innovative peer connections and caregiver programming. As we grow our programs, we will offer individual care, guidance, and support for the robust well-being of our older adults.

The Unison Adult Day Program (ADP) is designed for adults over the age of 41 years who are living with health challenges and cannot safely stay on their own without support.

Elder Abuse Outreach and Shelter

Elder Abuse Shelter & Outreach 

Elder Abuse is any action or inaction by a person in a position of trust that causes harm or distress to an older adult within the scope of emotional, financial, medication, physical, neglect or sexual abuse. The two most frequently identified and reported types of elder abuse in Canada are financial and emotional. 

If you or someone you know may be experiencing elder abuse, please call:

To make a report on a suspected case of elder abuse, please call the police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234

 If this is an emergency or someone you know is at immediate risk, please call 911.

If you are in emotional distress, please call Distress Centre Calgary at 403-266-4357. 

 

Unison Elder Abuse Shelter  

Our 14 bed Elder Abuse Shelter is for individuals of any gender, aged 55 or older, who are actively escaping abuse. 

The Unison Elder Abuse Shelter offers individuals a safe place to stay while actively working with caseworkers to transition back into the community safely and sustainably.

Anyone can phone this number, whether you are a concerned family member, community member, survivor of abuse or a related individual. 

 

Elder Abuse Response Team (EART) 

The Elder Abuse Response Team (EART) is a collaboration between Carya, Calgary Police Service, and Unison. This multidisciplinary team of social workers and police officers work together to identify, investigate, and support high risk and/or chronic cases of elder abuse. 

Our team is committed to reducing incidents of elder abuse and collaborates to: 

  • Respond to and investigate suspected cases of elder abuse. 
  • Provide support and guidance to abuse victims and their families. 
  • Assist other service providers working with abuse victims and provide information about elder abuse to professionals and organizations who work with older adults.

Active Aging

Built to help older adults to stay engaged and connected with the community, Active Aging provides the  generations 50+ a wide range of options to learn new skills and connect physically, emotionally and socially with others and continue to live and age well. Unison's Active Aging also accommodates for mobility, health or transportation challenges by offering courses, presentations and workshops online via ZOOM!  

Unison's Active Aging offers  

  • Courses such as fitness, academic, language, arts and music, digital skills training and general interest classes - available both in-person and online  
  • Workshops - available both in-person and online  
  • Presentations about topics tailored for seniors from health to finances and more - available both in-person and online  
  • Drop-in activities such as Jam Sessions, Bingo, Board Game Night, Floor Curling, Ping Pong and much more – perfect low-cost opportunities.   
  • Events such as holiday celebrations from Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day and Christmas Parties to Seniors' Week and Active Aging Week events.  
  • Unison Travel offering day trips such as going on hikes and sight-seeing, seeing theatre performances and much more.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels – Medicine Hat – can be a welcome relief for anyone who is unable to make meals on their own, due to a variety of reasons, such as;  age related illness, mobility loss, disability, illness, recovery from surgery or to alleviate caregiver stress.  Meals on Wheels is available to provide proper nutrition to those who require assistance.  There is no minimum number of meals and no fee to cancel.

Veiner Vintage Transport

Unison’s Veiner Vintage Transportation program has been addressing the transportation needs of low-income older adults in Medicine Hat, Redcliff and Dunmore since August 2023.   

Run by volunteers, Unison is able to take seniors to priority appointments such as to the Doctor, Dentist, Lawyer, Bank, Optometrist and the Veiner Centre. The Veiner Vintage Transport remains committed to empowering older adults to maintain their independence and age in place by providing them with a reliable means of transportation. By addressing transportation barriers and ensuring access to essential services, our program contributes to an overall improvement in the quality of life for seniors.
