Unison’s Seniors Support Department helps seniors navigate complex administrative processes with ease. We provide assistance in:

  • Financial Benefits & Pensions: Identifying and applying for eligible benefits to secure vital income support.
  • Housing Applications: Guiding seniors through subsidized and senior-specific housing options for safe, affordable living.
  • Tax Filing: Offering services tailored to low-income seniors to maximize deductions and credits.

Housing Help

Seniors Supports offers personalized consultation on senior housing in the Calgary region, tailored to the diverse needs of our clients. We provide a comprehensive checklist of required documents and forms, assisting clients in completing their housing applications. Our service includes faxing completed applications to housing companies on behalf of clients, saving them the effort of visiting each facility in person. Additionally, a Commissioner for Oaths is available to witness housing documents, ensuring the process is smooth and convenient.

  • Housing Conversations: Housing for seniors, hosted on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 10am to 11am at the Kerby Café. Discuss the process for finding affordable housing and get answers to questions that you might have in a relaxed atmosphere! FREE – Registration not required.

Unison Free Tax Clinic

  • Our annual Tax Clinics provide assistance for seniors to file their income tax, free of charge.
  • Eligibility includes Seniors that are 55+ and AISH clients, with an income limit of $35,000 per year for an individual or $50,000 combined income per year for a couple.
  • We do not prepare tax returns for self-employment, business/rental income, capital gains/losses or bankruptcy.  

Unison Free Income Tax  Clinic: March 3 to April 30, 2025 (Monday to Friday).  Booking opens on February 1. Call 403-705-3246 to book an appointment.

Service Canada staff will assist seniors 65+ to enroll for CDCP (Canada Dental Care Plan), if eligible, at Unison Kerby Centre in 2025:

  • January 8, February 12, May 14, June 11, July 16, August 13, September 17, October 15, November 26, and December 10: 9am – 12pm.
  • March 6, March 20, April 3, and April 16: 9am– 3pm.

CRA staff will assist seniors with answering queries about benefits and credits, printing tax slips, notice of assessment at Unison Kerby Centre, from 9am to 3pm on January 7 and 21, February 4 and 18, March 4 and 18, April 1, 15 and 29 in 2025.

  • Information and assistance with government services and benefits applications 
  • Federal - Canada Pension Plan (CPP) / Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPPD), Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplement, Income estimates, Death Benefit, Survivor’s Pension. 
  • Provincial – Alberta Seniors Benefit (ASB), Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), Special Needs Assistance, Optical/Dental Benefits, SHARP, Blue Cross. 
  • Local - Fair Entry Applications, Access Calgary.

Free 20 minute appointment for legal advice by volunteer lawyers over the phone.
