Lohrasp Seify
Director
I moved to Calgary when I was 17, fell in love with it, and never left. Ever since moving to the city, I’ve volunteered with the likes of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary, and other nonprofit organizations that provide services to children and young adults in need. I am elated to be able to give back to the city that adopted me - and the province as a whole - more than ever before through Unison, a cornerstone of our community.
By trade, I’m a technology executive at a Calgary based FinTech company, with expertise in data, technology, artificial intelligence, and how to leverage then to make an impact.
Bart van Schaayk
Director
Bart is a retired Chemical Engineer who grew up in Nova Scotia. He is a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University and the Nova Scotia Technical College (now part of Dalhousie University). The majority of his career was focused on the natural gas industry with companies including Gulf Canada Resources, Gulf Midstream (now Keyera), and Emera. Bart spent the last 12 years of his career as an industry consultant, including 10 years as a partner with Gas Processing Management Inc., a natural gas infrastructure consultancy.
Following retirement in 2016, Bart began active volunteering involvement. This has included serving on the boards of the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter (now Fear is not Love), Wood’s Homes, and the Pinebrook Golf & Country Club.

Jacquelyn Poetker
Secretary
As a retired gerontological social worker and educator with a focus on the issues of the older person, I look for opportunities to advocate for and support older adults. Most important to me is assuring that each of us has the information and support we need to always be at the center of our decision-making. As a board Member I am very proud of Unison’s varied programs, support and outreach that do that and much, much more.
Gordon (Gord) Nott
Director
My busy and active life would be incomplete without my deep love for my family, my church, caring for others, the great outdoors and music. Following a 34 year career in telecommunications and 10 gratifying years working with challenged adults, I have devoted my 18 years of retirement time to volunteering and serving on numerous committees to help ensure older adults in our community enjoy the very best lifestyle as they are able. I look forward to representing Medicine Hat on the Unison (Kerby Assembly) board as it will bring additional opportunities to support and provide a fulfilling and vibrant “Home Away from Home” for our seniors community at the Veiner Centre.
Gail Lai
Director
I am a corporate tax and technology lawyer and have over 15 years of board experience, having volunteered with many Calgary non-profit organizations in the past. I am thrilled to be a member of the board of directors of Unison. This is a dynamic organization doing innovative work in its food security programs, promotion of diversity and ground breaking partnerships, and I look forward to contributing to the vital work that Unison is doing in Alberta.
Marianne Rogerson
Director
I joined Unison Society in 2002 as a volunteer assisting in the Adult Day Support Program. Later I joined the Centre of Excellent and assisted in projects studying resilience and long-term care. The exposure to issues relevant to older adults spurred me to pursue a Ph.D. focusing on gerontology. Joining Unisons (Kerby Assembly) board of directors feels like returning home. Although much has changed over the years, Unison’s commitment to the welfare of members and the Alberta community is as strong today as it was 20 years ago. As a new board member, I have many interests, but one of my passions is housing. Where we live, how safe we feel, and the services we can access are important issues for everyone.
I look forward to working with Unison members, staff, directors, and the community over the next 2 years.
Peter Molzan
Director
I have been a volunteer at Unison Society for over 10 years, and over that time period I have helped in many different positions. By far, the most enjoyable is working at the Membership Desk where I have the opportunity to speak with many of the people that make use of the Unison Society. I also hear some of their concerns and I want to be able to bring some of those to the board's attention so that the members of Unison get the attention they need and have access to the programs they want. Unison is a fantastic organization and I really want to make sure that it continues to help and serve the needs of Alberta seniors well into the future.
Rein Saar
Director
Following a 26 year career with Union Carbide, I joined Equinox Engineering in Calgary, and eventually transitioned into retirement while still providing them limited consulting services.
Studying the aging process has led me to understand how important good social connections are for both extending the aging process and increasing the joy in life as we age. While participating in various activities at the Unison Society over a number of years it became evident that Unison Society, formerly the Kerby Assembly, provide a diverse range of social supports that is key to fostering these important treasured social connections. My interest as a board member is to help the Unison Society remain resilient, vibrant, and to grow to meet the growing needs for all of its services.
Richard Parker
Past Chair
Hi, I’m Richard Parker, Past Chair of the Unison Society Board. I became involved with Unison Society in 2009 after retiring from the City of Calgary. Since joining the board in 2015, I’ve developed deep admiration for the dedicated staff and the many volunteers who generously contribute their time and talents to support Calgary’s seniors. During my time as Chair, we navigated the challenges of the pandemic and responded to the growing demand for our services with resilience and rapid growth. I’m proud to continue serving as Past Chair and am pleased to welcome Kenneth Lin as the new Chair of the Unison Society Board.
Hank Heerema
Director Emeritus
I took early retirement from Esso in 1991 and became involved in Unison Society as a volunteer, that same year, working on the travel desk organizing trips for seniors. I quickly became involved with the computer and network needs at the Centre.
I have served on the board of directors for many years as a director, treasurer, vice president, president, and now past president. Next year, I will have volunteered at Unison Society for 30 years. I am honoured that the computer classroom that I put in place was dedicated to me as Hank’s Room. I have served with pleasure and know the Centre has been, and continues to be, a great organization, serving the needs of Calgary’s senior population, of which I am a member.

Our Volunteers at a Glance
We — at Unison, for Generations 50+ — have one of the most dedicated, incredible and hard-working volunteer bases. Every single day, our programs, assistance and supports run as smoothly as they do thanks to the staggering number of volunteer hours put in every single day, month, and year. It's of note to mention, that a large portion of our volunteers are themselves seniors, and what an incredible fact that is: it truly embodies the principles on which we were founded: "Nothing about us, without us."
And we are nothing without our volunteers.
