- Position: Food Security Assistant
- Terms of Employment: Full-time, fixed-term contract (5 months)
- Salary range: $26.8 - $28 per hour
- Location: Calgary
Job Purpose:
To support the day-to-day operations of the Thrive Food Security department with the goal of increasing food security and social inclusion for older adults in the community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary Responsibilities
1. Work closely with the Manager of Thrive & Community Programs to run the day-to-day operations of the programs, including:
- Kerby Centre Market/Food Bank
- Grocery Delivery
2. Provide guidance to volunteers supporting food recovery efforts including food repackaging and preparation to support the Kerby Centre Market
3. Act as a first point of contact for general inquiries, while practicing the values of Unison for Generations 50+
4. Ensure all accreditation standards and procedures are being followed and implemented in the department.
5. Support the service delivery of other Thrive programs, as needed
Kerby Centre Market
- Assist with the day-to-day operations of the program, including:
- Registration/Intake of clients
- Completing required documentation and supporting file management
- Implementation of food safety procedures and ensuring these are followed in the on-site food storage and in the Kerby Centre Market
- Be responsible for day-to-day and monthly upkeep of client data and statistics
Food Rescue, Storage and Distribution
- Work closely with the Manager of Thrive & Community Programs and the Thrive Food Security team on food donations flow and logistics, such as receiving, preparation, storage, and distribution
- Maintain the program storage space and Kerby Centre Market, including following procedures related to health and safety standards and inventory management
Grocery Delivery
- Take grocery orders over the phone and match the order with a volunteer or staff member
- Pick up item(s) from client and return them to grocery store for credit as needed
- Assist Thrive Coordinator with intake meetings, attending client homes and supporting initial grocery order
- Support day-to-day upkeep of client files
- Support completion of daily grocery order/volunteer schedules
- Complete outcome surveys and daily statistics
Additional:
- Assist with any other tasks as assigned by the Manager of Thrive & Community Programs, or other departments with the approval of the Manager
Job Requirements:
Education & Experience
- Degree or Diploma in a human services field
- At least 1 year of experience in a related field, preferably with the aging population and a focus on trauma-informed and client-centred approaches preferred
- A combination of personal suitability, education and experience may also be considered on a competency or equivalency basis.
Skills and Competencies
- Commitment to addressing food insecurity and helping older adults in need
- Knowledgeable about community resources and skilled in providing resource navigation and support
- Customer service skills, including empathy, compassion and cultural sensitivity
- Good communication skills and the ability to interact with diverse groups of people
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as individually, as needed
- Basic knowledge of safe food handling preferred but not required (training will be provided)
- Work as a team within Unison at Kerby Centre and with all community partners
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and computer applications
- Vehicle preferred with appropriate level of insurance of $2m (Policy I6.2)
Working Conditions:
Work is primarily on-site at Kerby Centre; however, it may also require working in the community, at client homes, community markets, or picking up donations. This is a full-time position working 8:00 am to 4:00 pm or 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, 5 days/week, Monday – Friday.
Physical requirements
Physical ability to stand for extended periods, walk up/down stairs, lift and carry up to 35 lbs., and perform repetitive tasks
