Making a difference, one room at a time

Written by Unison for Generations 50+ | Jun 6, 2025 7:41:00 PM

Having a space of our own is something we cherish. The spaces we occupy impact our wellbeing, and if you have ever been forced out of your home, it's something you miss intimately. Unison's Elder Abuse Shelter is occupied by people who have lost that part of themselves - a safe space to call their own. We work hard to make sure the Elder Abuse Shelter feels like home.

The Unison Elder Abuse Shelter has 14 furnished bedrooms, and they're each special because our community has joined us to support seniors who have fled danger. This is a community that believes safety and dignity are basic rights - not privileges. Some of our supporters have made their mark by adopting rooms at the shelter.

Baytex Energy supported us not once, but twice - adopting rooms in the spring and fall of 2024. Their ongoing commitment to giving back continues to make a real impact.

Precision Drilling  adopted a shelter room in 2025, helping us expand our support for older adults in crisis.

Elevate Progress Club adopted a room in 2023, creating a safe, supportive space for someone who is starting over.

Adopted shelter rooms are marked by a recognition plate - a powerful reminder that someone cared enough to make a difference. Our sponsors have our deepest gratitude. Your support transforms our shelter into more than just a safe space - it becomes a place of renewal, dignity, and hope.

As we mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, we invite more organizations to take part in the important work of creating safe spaces. Adopting a room is a meaningful way for your company to give back by supporting a cause that truly matters. It’s an opportunity to keep your legacy alive in a place where lives are being changed every day.

WEAAD is a day of action across the world to stand against elder abuse. At Unison, we see the impact of elder abuse firsthand. That’s why our Elder Abuse Shelter exists: to give seniors a safe space to heal, rebuild, and start over.

If your organization is looking for a powerful way to support the community and honour WEAAD, we’d love to talk. Together, we can create more safe spaces - and more second chances.
