Merry slip-mas!

It's Monday, November 24th, 2025. Do you know where your anti-slip gear is?

If you're in and around Calgary today, we're enjoying our first big snowfall of the year. Rumour has it we're heading into a polar vortex as well. Well, more science than rumour - still - winter is here (for now) and it's best to be prepared.

For most of us, this is standard yearly protocol. There are newcomers to Calgary, though. Whether you're from a perennially warm location, or from a less snowy province, we're in a time of year where the risk of falling increases by ten-billion (that's not a scientific fact - more anecdotal - from experience).

Here are some tips to decrease our risk of falling in the great white north:

  • Get some of those anti-slip covers for your shoes. There are tons of styles, and you can get them at Canadian Tire, or any outfitter store (Atmosphere, MEC, Cabela, etc.). Many are universal and should slip easily right over your shoes and boots. We recommend getting them even if you have a good pair of winter boots. When it snows, followed by a drop in temperature, it's easy to miss spotting ice beneath the snow. It's not worth the risk. A winter fall can lead to fractures and a long healing time, which can put you at risk for isolation during the cold months ahead. So now, you're stuck with an injury and the winter blues. Get the grips!
  • No shame in a cane. A walking aide can help distribute your weight across three points, giving you a bit more stability. It can also help save you energy while navigating snowy sidewalks! Walking poles are popular with hikers and trail-explorers. Why not use them to help avoid slips and falls?
  • Skip the scarf. We may love snuggling up with a decorative, cozy bit of winter flair, but your scarf can become unraveled, get in the way, or trip us. Opt for a neck warmer that will keep you warm without posing a hazard.
  • Give yourself LOTS of time. Plan your route and take extra time to get there. If you're in a rush, you're at greater risk of slipping and falling.

Winter feels like it lasts forever, and then it's gone. During the colder months, it's better to protect yourself to avoid serious injury. These three steps are a good place to start!
